Long, thin, and low-cost data cables are readily available, and although they may appear to be functioning properly, the performance of the data cables can significantly affect the quality of the signals they carry. Figure 1 shows the laboratory testing setup of a USB 3.2 Gen 1 data cable operating at 5Gbps speed. The signal generator is established and measured at 5Gbps (clock frequency of 2.5GHz). In the test, a passive data line with a length of three meters (the maximum allowed length for USB 3.2 Gen 1) was used, with a differential impedance of 96-104 Ω and an insertion loss of -10dB at 2.5GHz.
Figure 2 shows the eye diagram generated by this test. Firstly, it is very obvious that the eye area is almost not open, indicating poor performance of the data cable in practical applications with PR6423010-010-CN. Secondly, the color display of the eye diagram has a smaller aperture at lower BER (less errors per unit time). These results indicate that the performance of the USB 3.2 Gen 1 data cable is poor at 3Gbps speed; This data cable has a very high BER and may not meet recognized specifications.
The solution to overcome the signal integrity challenges of USB, USB Type-C, and DP data lines is to add a signal repeater (ReDriver) or retimer (ReTimer) at the sending or receiving end of the data line.
