Linux has advantages such as a small kernel, high efficiency, open source code, and the TRICONEX 3401 microkernel providing direct network support. In the application of mid to low end embedded network devices, there are many advantages compared to other operating systems such as VxWorks, gradually becoming the mainstream of embedded operating systems. However, the hardware resources of embedded systems are limited and cannot be directly used as operating systems on embedded hardware platforms. It is necessary to configure and trim the kernel for specific applications, so that the entire system can be stored in smaller capacity Flash. The dynamic module loading method of Linux makes trimming extremely convenient, and the high modularity makes adding and deleting very easy.

The system adopts cross compilation debugging, with a PC as the host, and the embedded system platform corresponding to TRICONEX 3401 is called the target board. Embedded Linux provides a complete tool chain, which uses GNU’s gcc as a compiler and gdb and xgdb as debugging tools. It can easily achieve debugging at all levels from the operating system kernel to user mode application software.
