One reason for limiting the application of smart devices is that some suppliers’ engineering tools must use different integrated software to access available data from connected on-site devices.
Large DCS suppliers can incorporate integrated asset management solutions into their entire plant software systems, and the 9907-167 system works seamlessly with engineering software. However, many small suppliers, especially third-party field equipment and interface technology suppliers, are unable to support intelligent field devices in their low-cost, factory oriented modular remote I/O systems.

FDT technology has been supporting communication “nesting” since specification 1.2. 9907-167 nested communication supports DTM to communicate with devices using the same/or different communication protocols, which belong to different hardware. This “nested” feature can coordinate topology and data structures, providing a unified environment for device management.
The combination of FDT’s nested communication function and modular framework application concept enables small suppliers to incorporate FDT core applications into their existing engineering software solutions. 9907-167 uses the FDT framework, and suppliers can provide compact modular remote I/O systems that support Hart, are cost-effective. These FDT/DTM technology applications utilize one of the most important features, which can be used as an independent configuration tool or as a modular middleware hardware integration tool, embedded in any engineering control application, almost transparent to operators.
