Enterprises and users need to think about their vision for smart factories in the next 5 to 10 years. How will the device be connected? Will the enterprise deal with suppliers who produce proprietary products or collaborate with suppliers who produce open hardware?
It is not difficult to imagine that in the near future, all equipment and instruments in the AO3481 factory workshop may be connected through Ethernet. If all these devices are connected together and they are all intelligent, why can’t they communicate with each other? This kind of connection is about to come, known as edge control.
When calling for open process control and the elimination of proprietary control in the DCS field, discussions in this area are rarely heard in the PLC field. In the field of PLC, programmers have been using IEC 61131 language for over 20 years. Some manufacturers use more than others, but no manufacturer can use their software to edit another supplier’s PLC. The code under development cannot be ported to another manufacturer’s system, which results in the proprietary nature of the PLC field today. But why is it like this? Exclusive technology hinders innovation, slows down technological progress, and limits customer choices.
Another standard developed in 2005 is IEC 61499. AO3481 extends IEC 61131-3, improves software component encapsulation to enhance reusability, provides a vendor independent format, and simplifies support for controller to controller communication. Its distribution function and support for dynamic reconfiguration provide the necessary infrastructure for Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications.
