To ensure safety, technicians need to better observe the flames during the hydrogen torch combustion process. By comparing the traditional commonly used technologies for monitoring hydrogen torches, such as thermocouples and ultraviolet (UV) sensors, it was found that non-contact infrared thermal imagers are ideal monitoring tools because other methods cannot truly see hydrogen flames. Although hydrogen flames cannot be seen during the day, they do emit thermal radiation. Infrared thermal imagers can detect these temperature changes, allowing technicians to visualize the exact movement of flames and safely approach hydrogen flames.
