The input CM2201  is periodically sent to two PLCs simultaneously, while the output data is periodically transmitted to the PROFINET IO device by both PLCs simultaneously. But only one output value can be sent to the physical output, so the PROFINET IO device needs to know which PLC takes control and which PLC is in standby state, which is identified by the status information of the message. The status of the output data sent by the main PLC is marked as valid (IOPS=GOOD), and the status of the output data sent by the backup PLC is marked as invalid (CM2201  ). Only messages marked as valid are received by the IO device.
The redundancy of I/O devices ensures that when one of the sites fails, the PLC can read the correct process data from the backup I/O device site, which means that the I/O site needs to be configured twice on the hardware.

CM2201  simultaneously reads input process data from two I/O device stations, which are called PRIMARY-I/O-Station and BackUP-I/O – Station, respectively. In the control program, a selection function is used to determine which sub station’s input data is selected based on the connection status of the logical communication. For outputting process data, it is relatively simple as the output data is always written to two I/O sub stations simultaneously. The status variables of the PROFINET IO device are periodically sent to the PLC, and the PLC can know the working status of the CM2201  device through the status variables.
