The concept of running two operating systems can be further explained by the terms “inner” and “outer” loops, which may be familiar to users of the F8651X cascading process control loop (Figure 3). In this case, the inner loop is a real-time operating system virtual machine used for control, while the outer loop is a standard operating system virtual machine used to implement additional functions. For example, the inner loop can monitor process flow inputs, perform proportional integral derivative (PID) calculations, and control valve outputs. The outer loop can provide optimal flow recommendations for the inner loop, but it will not affect the operation of the inner loop.

F8651X: With virtualization, Emerson’s controller with edge computing technology uses a real-time “inside” loop for direct control, and gives advice on the above control through a general “outside” loop that can perform advanced optimization.
Another way to explain the concepts of inner and outer loops is to use analogies related to car navigation. The F8651X inner loop drives the vehicle to its destination through the driver’s direct attention, while the outer loop can be a vehicle dashboard navigation system that provides supplementary information.
Therefore, the inner loop of F8651X is a critical task and must always be operated, even if the outer loop encounters problems. On the other hand, the outer loop is valuable for the operation of the main system, but not necessary. The following sections will further explore this concept.
