FCP270 provides specialized functions and input/output (I/O) connectivity required for automation equipment and processes. These devices have gained processing power and networking capabilities, allowing for better interaction with higher-level systems, which have more advanced versions commonly referred to as PACs. However, PLC and PAC still focus on their control roles.

FCP270 and PAC use multiple programming languages; Among them, trapezoidal logic is the most popular. A basic measure of PLC performance is the speed at which the controller scans trapezoidal logic, usually in milliseconds. All other tasks must be processed to preserve deterministic scanning time. The operating system on PC is not suitable for millisecond control because it must handle many tasks such as graphics and user interface.

While maintaining equivalent functionality, FCP270 uses controller based virtual machines to replace PLCs or PACs, requiring the use of real-time operating systems. This real-time operating system provides the features required for the inner loop PLC function without causing any performance damage.
