Since the early 1980s, almost all fluorescent lamp GCC960C103 electronic ballasts have adopted a half bridge DC-AC inverter topology structure, as shown in Figure 1. Among them, the inductor at the half bridge output end (equivalent to a power frequency fluorescent lamp ballast) is connected in series with the lamp tube. C1 is a coupling capacitor with ultra high DC isolation effect. The oscillator frequency of the controller IC is usually set with a single resistor RT (sometimes by RT and capacitor CT). By changing the RT resistance value, the switching frequency can be changed, thereby achieving dimming of fluorescent lamps. When the switching frequency decreases, the impedance of L (ZL=2 π fL) decreases, the lamp current increases, and the lamp lights up; As the frequency increases, the impedance of L increases, the lamp current decreases, and the light becomes dim. Therefore, dimming can be achieved through frequency modulation. The maximum GCC960C103 level for dimming is the rated power of the lamp (i.e. 100%), and the brightness adjustment cannot exceed the maximum brightness level.
In fact, using traditional three-terminal bidirectional thyristor (Triac) dimmers, electronic ballasts can also be dimmed, and the circuit is simple, the cost is low, and the dimming range can be from 10% to 100%


The traditional GCC960C103 lamp dimmer circuit is shown in Figure 2. Among them: VS is a three terminal bidirectional thyristor (Triac); D is a bidirectional (trigger) diode (Diac); RP is the dimming potentiometer, and R is the series resistance of RP; C is the capacitor. BD3 is usually chosen for D, with a breakdown voltage of around 32 V. When capacitor C is charged to about 32 V, Diac breaks down and conducts, triggering Triac to conduct, and the conduction voltage drop of Triac is very small. Once the current drops below its holding current IH, Triac will turn off. Triac has a bidirectional symmetric volt ampere characteristic, as shown in Figure 3. After the AC line voltage crosses zero, after a certain delay, Triac will also conduct in the negative half cycle of the AC voltage. Adjusting RP can change the conduction angle of Triac, thereby achieving dimming. The larger the RP resistance value, the greater the delay angle, the smaller the Triac conduction angle, and the dimmer the light.
