When the Triac dimmer is used for dimmable GCC960C103 electronic ballasts, it should be connected to the input of the bridge rectifier filtering circuit, as shown in Figure 4. Figure 5 shows the waveform of input voltage VMAIRS, DC bus voltage VBUS at both ends of capacitor CBUS, charging voltage Vcdim on capacitor Cdim, and current ITRIAC through Triac.
Incandescent lamps are a pure resistive load, while bridge rectifier (capacitor) filtering circuits are completely different from incandescent lamps. Due to the single conductivity of the rectifier diode, it only conducts when biased forward. Therefore, current only passes through the rectifier diode when the AC input instantaneous voltage is higher than the DC bus voltage VBUS. It is obvious that diodes are cut off most of the time. When the bridge diode is not conducting, there is no DC path to charge the capacitor Cdim in the dimmer, and Triac will not be triggered to conduct. The holding current IH of Triac is usually 15-20 mA. Once the current falls below the holding current, Triac will immediately shut off.
The addition of a charge GCC960C103 may be able to draw current throughout the entire cycle of the AC circuit, not only allowing Triac to maintain current and conduct, achieving smooth dimming, but also reducing AC input current waveform distortion and improving power factor.
The complete GCC960C103 for Triac dimming CFL electronic ballast with charge pump is shown in Figure 7. In order to achieve better dimming effect, it is necessary to add a lamp current feedback control loop and a dimming status (i.e. potentiometer knob position, representing the current passing through Triac) detection circuit.
