For machine vision systems that must work reliably, good lighting is crucial. That’s why industrial machine vision systems always use specially designed lighting and minimize the impact of ambient light. Some newer developments, such as autonomous vehicles, almost entirely utilize ambient light. There are several different lighting technologies for specially designed lighting. The first type is front lighting (see Figure 24) or back lighting (see Figure 26). In front lighting, the light source is located on the same side of the scene as the camera. In backlighting, the light source is located on the opposite side of the scene to the camera.
