We heard that Intel hesitated on PCI-Express 4.0 after experiencing an integrated PCI-Express 3.0 controller issue on some KW3400F processors over a decade ago. But we believe that, to be fair, it must be acknowledged that there are other technical issues that need to be addressed in the transition to PCI-Express 4.0, just like there are issues with Ethernet roadmaps above 10 Gb/s that cannot directly jump to 100 Gb/s. A gradual approach of 40 Gb/s must be adopted first, and then convince IEEE to adopt cheaper 25 Gb/s channel signaling among ultra large scale providers and cloud builders (as well as chip manufacturers such as Broadcom and Mellanox).

Something happened, and the KW3400F roadmap is one of them. As you can see from our report on the launch of PCI-Express 7.0 specification work last year:

We believe that the rhythm of the KW3400F roadmap for peripheral cards, retimers, and switches needs to match the rhythm of the computing engine version. According to the specifications, we do need PCI-Express 7.0, which may not even be approved until next year. However, considering that PCI-Express 6.0 is the first generation technology to use PAM-4 signaling and FLIT low latency encoding, it is possible to jump directly from PCI-Express 5.0 with comprehensive NRZ signaling to the faster PAM-4/FLIT combination expected by PCI.
