We have transitioned from point-to-point interconnection (hanging on the PCI-Express bus) with a few devices (one or two disk controllers, one network controller, LC100SSP7, and perhaps some other dedicated peripheral devices) to devices equivalent to PCI-Express switching structures, used to connect CPUs to accelerators, network interfaces, flash memory, and the upcoming CXL expansion memory. Retimers are used to extend the length of copper wires; The longer the wire, the more retimers are needed. Due to latency issues and the fact that PCI-Express is used as an extension for CPU buses, try not to make the cables too long. However, if you want to expand the PCI-Express structure to multiple racks, or even a whole row of racks, then with the development of PCI-Express, the bandwidth is getting higher and the demand for retimers will be increasing.
