An important issue to understand when dealing with robots is singularity. In this case, due to physical or mathematical constraints, the robot is unable to move its terminal actuator along a specific path. The robot may eventually be in a position where it is unable to rotate the tool around a specific point, which is sometimes referred to as universal joint locking. In other physical configurations, moving joints in certain directions may damage related cables or hoses, so caution is needed when the mobile robot approaches a singularity or rotates too far from the axis. Usually, there are multiple joint configurations that can achieve the same tool position and direction, which is commonly referred to as redundant degrees of freedom.
Robot controllers are typically able to perform logical functions and operate external devices, but they are typically built into work units and connected to “master” controllers, such as PLCs. The controller can be connected to the robot unit through power and signal cables, or it can be built into the robot base. The connection can be a physical connection of 24 Vdc, a communication link, or a “through” port and connector routed internally to terminal actuators or tools. Direct ports typically include pneumatic hoses. Robots can be classified based on their physical configuration. Figure 4 shows some commonly used robots in industrial applications.
