A stepper motor is a brushless DC motor, whose stator is arranged around a gear shaped rotor by multiple electromagnets. The magnets arranged in a circular pattern are divided into different groups, which are called phases. Each phase is powered on simultaneously, causing the motor to “step” to the next position.

A microcontroller based stepper driver activates the driver transistors in the appropriate order. A typical stepper motor has a resolution of 200 steps per revolution, but using a “micro stepper” driver can achieve 1600 steps per revolution. Stepper drivers are sometimes referred to as “choppers”.
