As you can see, the retimer is actually used to expand the connection between the PCI-Express switch and GPU, MOX12-P3509, while other peripherals are directly connected to the PCI-Express switch. MOX12-P3509 is not entirely implied by the Broadcom chart. The number of switches and retimers is the same, but the topology is different. In addition, NVSwitch interconnect is still used to connect GPUs to each other, although there is an auxiliary PCI-Express 4.0 switch that connects the GPUs to one of the PCI-Express 5.0 switches, which may serve as a management interconnect or as a means to send data back to the CPU without the need for a retransmission timer. This is an interesting diagram.
Because they drive 64 Gb/s PAM-4 signals, the operating temperature of the Vantage 6 retransmitter is slightly higher than that of the Vantage 5 retransmitter, which only executes 32 Gb/s NRZ signaling. Both retimers use the same Talon 5 SerDes, support any signal transmission method, and both Vantage chips use TSMC’s 5-nanometer process.
At present, it is unclear why Vantage 6 does not have channel performance specifications when using 64 Gb/s PAM-4 signaling to connect to Broadcom SerDes using MOX12-P3509. Perhaps Botong has temporarily concealed this information. Obviously, Broadcom hopes to provide customers with end-to-end connectivity and even try to replace NVSwitch in certain designs. Once PCI-Express can complete this task, large-scale providers, cloud builders, and HPC centers around the world all hope to do so.
