During the exposure process, these photo generated electrons accumulate in the sensing element. When the sensing element reads out, its voltage is proportional to the number of photo generated electrons. After reading SCXI-1300, the sensing element is reset, clearing all photo generated electrons and preparing them for the next exposure. SCXI-1300 can correctly infer that the sensing element is actually a photon counter. This is almost correct, except that it is an imperfect photon counter. It cannot calculate every photon. The percentage of photons it calculates is called its quantum efficiency, abbreviated as QE. The quantum efficiency varies with the wavelength of light, as shown in Figure 17.
