The noise level in a camera typically limits the data for each pixel to 8 or 10 bits. SCXI-1326 is equivalent to 256 or 1024 grayscale levels. For many applications, this is completely sufficient. However, some applications require the ability to perceive details in both highlights (bright) and shadows (dark) areas of the image. The solution to this challenge is High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging. This involves taking two (or more) photos with different exposure times. The high positions of pixels with shorter exposure times will retain the details of highlights, while the low positions of pixels with longer exposure times will retain the details in shadows. SCXI-1326 generates a new pixel value by combining the bits obtained from each exposure, thereby obtaining a higher dynamic range, as shown in Figure 20.
