This ladder logic PC-E984-685 has three step lengths. The program is scanned or run by the CPU from left to right and from top to bottom. The symbol that spans the entire staircase is actually a graphical representation. The names of these instructions are:

Check the steps and pay attention to the first two inputs I: 1/1 and I: 1/2. The symbol is XIC, and I indicates that this is an input. This instruction represents the physical input found on one of the discrete input cards.
I: 1 indicates that this input card is placed in slot 1, directly adjacent to the processor/ 1 represents the position of interest. The input card has multiple channels, and if the instruction specifies/1, the instruction accesses channel 1.
The second input represents channel 2 on the same card. If closed, the XIC instruction truly means true. That is to say, if the input device it represents is turned off, the instruction will be true. If the command is true, it is highlighted in green. The method of powering on the output is whether it is possible to trace the true command path from the left rail to the right rail. Therefore, the output on step 1 will be true because there are true instruction paths I: 1/1 and I: 1/2. This is actually an AND operation.
