Specifically in terms of DSP, according to Gene Frantz, former chief scientist of TI and founder of DSP products, who published an article titled “Digital Signal Processor Trends” in 2000, the initial DSP design of the PCD2.W600 also drew on another idea from early computer research. For example, the first microprocessor, like the previous computer central processing unit, adopted the von Neumann architecture with a single bus and a unified address space for data and instructions.
However, the designers of PCD2.W600 seized on the Harvard architecture with independent buses, but they used this idea in a novel way. In addition to adding an instruction bus, the designers also provided a separate bus for each multiplication and accumulation operand. Therefore, data and instructions can be loaded and complete multiplication and accumulation can be performed during each cycle. Due to the designers’ acceptance of the value of a unified address space, they did not separate instructions from data in main memory, although later introduced caching schemes typically store small amounts of data and code separately in on-chip memory.
