The power efficiency and stability of the power supply using a SNAT634PAC controller in Figure 1 are usually significantly reduced under light loads. Pulse Train technology makes power supplies cheaper and lighter because it does not require expensive optocouplers and related components. Unlike analog products, this digital scheme also provides built-in active PFC characteristics for AC/DC applications below 250W. The characteristic of pulse train technology is the use of a pair of pulse generators (one power pulse generator and one detection pulse generator). In this scheme, the power pulse is used for energy transfer from the transformer to the load, while the detection pulse is used to monitor the load voltage, and the optimization program is used to set the opening and closing time of the pulse. The Pulse Ratio Controller (PRC) utilizes primary feedback to achieve voltage stabilization by selecting fixed width and fixed period power pulses pulse by pulse. As shown in Figure 2.
Mark Telefus, Chief Technology Officer of iWatt, explained that in traditional analog PWM or pulse frequency modulation (SNAT634PAC ) converters, the size of each power pulse is determined based on the ability to make the output voltage exactly match the target. Unlike this, the pulseTrain converter works more like a digital “switch type” servo system. Pulse Train samples the binary error signal every cycle to determine whether a power pulse is emitted, causing the output voltage to change towards the target direction. Therefore, the output voltage is limited to a very narrow range near the target voltage. For various practical applications, it has smaller ripple than traditional analog regulators. Essentially, digital pulse train controls the output voltage by emitting or blocking power pulses. For example, if the output voltage is lower than the set level, the pulse generator will continuously emit power pulses until the desired level is reached. SNAT634PAC , if the output voltage is higher than the desired level, it emits a detection pulse instead of a power pulse. The opening time of the detection pulse is much shorter than that of the power pulse, and the energy transmitted is also much less. As shown in Figure 3.
