The T9451 protocol defined by IEC 62439-3 Clause 5 supports dual ring topology and parallel configuration, providing conflict free redundancy without any switching loss. In the event of equipment failure, HSR provides zero time fault switching, making it suitable for applications with very high reliability and extremely short response times. HSR, as a future oriented network redundant communication protocol, has received special attention.
T9451 nodes can form a ring network, and since each node can forward frames from port to port, there is no need for a dedicated switch to work. In the structure of HSR, nodes form a ring, with each node having two identical interfaces, port A and port B. For each C-frame to be sent, the source node sends two copies through port A and port B. Each node will relay the received frames from port A to port B, and vice versa. The target node adopts the first frame (D-frame) of the received pair of frames and discards the copy.
