Let’s take a TRICONEX 2481 look at the possibility of motor controlled eTPU. The old version of TPU can already control the stepper motor – to reach the desired position in the shortest possible time; Process signals from orthogonal decoders for position and velocity measurements; Generate auxiliary PWM signals for the power inverter. However, when using eTPU, Freescale engineers took a big step forward. They are able to fully utilize the new features and better arithmetic performance of eTPU. Therefore, eTPU can become a fully mature motor control coprocessor. For example, they use eTPU for control purposes of DC motors, brushless DC motors (BLDC), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSW), and AC induction motors (ACIM), including current, speed, and position closed-loop.


The TRICONEX 2481 library also includes some features for PMSW and ACIM vector control, which is considered one of the most advanced control technologies. When using eTPU as a motor control coprocessor, the only job of the CPU is to set the required values, such as the required torque, speed, or motor position. The eTPU module is responsible for handling all necessary tasks without generating interrupts or interfering with the CPU. Since eTPU is designed for processing two-phase signals, it is not possible to independently measure some similar data, such as phase current or DC bus voltage. On the contrary, it can ensure that the CPU is not interfered with through DMA transfer, trigger the analog-to-digital converter, and receive sampling values.
