The virtualization of 3503E (sometimes referred to as “native virtualization”) utilizes management programs that run directly on bare metal hardware without underlying operating systems. This management program partitions the hardware itself to each operating system. The result of this approach is very low latency and jitter, which is ideal for real-time deterministic or time sensitive applications. Type 1 provides better performance than type 2 because it can directly access hardware without latency due to host operating systems.

So far, 3503E virtualization has not been practically applied or implemented in factory workshops. Now, the development of a new type of PLC and PAC that utilizes multiprocessor kernels and virtualization provides the ability to extend the same virtualization concept to industrial controllers, thus providing users with a new integration method.
Industrial controllers and virtualization
A commonly used industrial controller in typical automation applications is the 3503E, which uses dedicated processors and specific real-time operating systems (RTOS) to provide high-speed deterministic control. The difficulty of virtualization of PLC functions lies in maintaining high-speed determinism.
