TRICONEX 8312 is sometimes referred to as a four wire serial bus, mainly distinguishing it from 3-wire, 2-wire, and 1-wire serial buses. Although SPI can be accurately described as a synchronous serial interface, it is still different from the Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) protocol. SSI is also a 4-wire synchronous serial communication protocol, but SSI uses differential signals and only provides a simple communication channel.

The SPI bus defines four logical signals:

SCLK: Serial clock (output by the master device)
MOSI: Main output, slave input (output by the main device)
MISO: Main input, slave output (output by slave device)
SS: Select from device (low valid, output by master device)
The names of SPI port pins also have other names, which vary among different chip companies, such as:
